WORKSHOP: SECRET INNER LIFE OF CHILDREN

A FOUR-DAY WORKSHOP

Sudha uses creative activities, experiential role plays, video clips, and interactive group discussions to illuminate the subtle and unintended messages that adults may pass on to children in their daily interactions. She will shine a light on two biological phenomena to help us understand why certain ‘not okay’ behaviors can arise in kids.

The first biological phenomenon involves differences between the rudimentary child brain and the developed adult brain.
These differences mean children can develop their own secret, distorted view of the world and pick up damaging and unintended messages about their self-worth.

The second phenomenon involves the physiological ‘fight/flight’ reaction triggered in our human bodies when we perceive our survival may be under threat. As children are reliant on adults for survival, they are triggered more easily and can find themselves overwhelmed by emotions and body sensations.

WORKSHOP PROGRAM

Day 1: Raising Awareness – Understanding Myself & My Behaviors

  • Kids are honestly showing us what is happening within them. We may not understand their non-language ways of communicating, and we may just try to correct their ‘not okay’ behaviors
  • Understanding the process of human evolution and the importance of ‘social danger,’ our ‘survival mode’ and our ‘sense of control.

Day 2: Raising Awareness – Experiencing A Full Range of Emotions

  • Supporting kids to develop a healthy ‘sense of control’, so the threat of ‘social danger’ does not activate their ‘survival mode’ so readily
  • Understanding that kids may react sharply if their primary emotions are not recognized or validated by the adults in their lives.

Day 3: Using Awareness to Practice Skills of ‘Cooperation Vs Collision’

  • Neuroscience – the five main differences in adult and child brains
  • How the outcomes of punishing children for misbehavior can be damaging because kids easily interpret punishment as an exclusion/rejection and may not take responsibility for their behaviors.
  • Using consequences (not discipline) to hold kids responsible for their misbehavior and to build their healthy ‘sense of control.’

Day 4: Using Awareness to Practice Skills of ‘Sense of Control’

  • Children depend on adults to see their own worth.
  • How to acknowledge effort and avoid the perils of praise & criticism. *The corroding power of NO and DON’T.
  • Matching our words to our tone and body language.
  • The backward bicycle & the process of changing.
